NBA Condemns Operation Python Dance, Orders Buratai To Call-Off Operation
Abia state branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has condemned in strong terms, the ongoing Operation Python Dance II by the Nigerian military in the South East.
Chairman of the legal body, Mr Nnamdi Eluwa, while addressing newsmen today, Thursday in Umuahia, the state capital pointed out that the Operation which has now generated more tension and chaos in the city who, was baseless as there was no security threat or insurrection in the city and by extension, the South East that would warrant such massive deployment of troops to the region.
He also said the Operation was a clear violation of the fundamental human rights of the people in the state as they are now harassed in the process and now live in fear or apprehension.
His words: “It is our position that there is no security threat in Umuahia and its environs to warrant the deployment of soldiers to intimidate and molest innocent Nigerians who are going about their lawful business.
“We condemn in strong terms the unfortunate attack on journalists in Umuahia and raiding of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat by officers of Nigerian Army on Sept. 12.
“The attack on members of the NUJ by the Army to say the least is an attack on the people of Abia,” he said.
