Ozubulu Massacre: See Why You Cannot Trust Nigeria Newspapers Completely
The Nigeria media have often misled the Public with its reports and analyses.
Strong evidence to this emerged with the different and sharply contrasting reports of the Media on the number of death toll in the Sunday Massacre of worshipers at St Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu, Anambra state.
The outrageous, differing statistics of deaths were reported by the major print media as follows:
The Guardian: 47 killed
Vanguard: 35 killed
The Telegraph: 19 Killed
Daily Sun: 11 Killed
Sunrise: Over 100 Killed
It is note worthy that these reports from the media mentioned above, as well as the report from the Nigeria Police were gathered in less than 24 hours the incident occurred, a seemingly impossible way to gather real fact about an incident of such magnitude.
Also, the Priest of the church, who officiated the mass during the killing, during a Requiem Mass held by the Nnewi Catholic Diocese Priests, yesterday, Monday, stated that the statistics available to him numbered to 14 dead persons.
He however, added he was going to confirm the report, which came from eye witnesses, when he visited the Mortuary.
We hope our media and the Nigeria Police Force would do due diligence in information gathering and in their work.
