Umu-Igbo Fight Depression...It Kills Fast: Wife Of Gov. Ugwuanyi Cries Out
Adaora the darling wife of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi, says the increasing trend of depression in Igbo land, and more elsewhere in the country is damning.
She said this at an event orgainsed to commemorate this year’s World Health Day, organised by Ugo’s Touch of Life Foundation (U-TOLF) in conjuction with World Health Organisation, at the Enugu state house.
Mrs Ugwuanyi, ably represented by Mr Stanley Okere, who spoke on the topic “Depression: Lets Talk” emphasized that lots of people undergoe inner depression that brings silent death because of ignorance and lack of support.
Her words: “Depression is something we can’t see, but it’s nonetheless a leading cause of death in people.”
From his own part, Dr. Femi Taiwo of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu,listed part of the symptoms of depression to include prolonged feeling of sadness, reduced energy and activity level, loss of interest in personal hobbies, reduced appetite and sleep, economic situation in the country etc.
Dr. Femi therefore, advised people to ensure they always consult a psychiatric doctor immediately they discover such symptoms and admonished that “people should always take things easy and commit everything into the hands of God,”
